County of courthouse: Craig County
Location of courthouse: 214 Canadian Ave., Vinita

"Workers began clearing out the contents of the old Craig County Courthouse on Monday.

"District 3 Commissioner Dan Peetoom explained that it’s been a long process to demolish the old building, which has been vacant since the new courthouse opened in 2006.

"Peetoom said that anything inside the building that is not structurally attached must come out before the building can be demolished.

"Peetoom said that once the contents have been removed, the county commissioners can begin the bidding process to select a demolition contractor. Peetoom is hopeful that the old building can be torn down this year.

'“That’s what we’re shooting for,” Peetoom said.

"Crews backed dump trucks up to the building on Monday to jettison old office furniture, boxes other assorted items through windows on the second floor.

"The interior of the old building is a dusty mess compared to its former glory.

"The ceiling has collapsed in an old courtroom on the third floor, and the entrance to the old Sheriff’s Office has been demolished." ~ Vinita Daily Journal, by Denton Thomason, January 31, 2017
