Selon une légende, le sabot du cheval de Roland, neveu de Charlemagne, aurait brisé en deux un rocher dans un défilé d'où débouche la Nive, à un endroit appelé aujourd'hui le Pas de Roland. En basque, cet endroit s'appelle Atekagaitz, ce qui signifie « mauvais passage ».

L'armée de Charlemagne conduite par Roland longeait la Nive. Un rocher leur barra la route.
Roland, à l'aide de son épée Durandal ouvrit une brèche qui permit aux soldats de passer. Roland laissa sur le rocher la trace de son pied.

According to a legend, the hoof of Roland's horse broke in half a rock in a gorge from which the Nive flows, in a place now called the Pas de Roland. In Basque, this place is called Atekagaitz, which means "bad passage". Roland was Charlemagne's nephew.
The information panel says this:
Charlemagne's army led by Roland ran along the Nive. A rock blocked their way.
Roland, using his Durandal sword, opened a rift that allowed the soldiers to pass. Roland left a trace of his foot on the rock.
