On the east wall of the vacant building at 311 E. Broadway in downtown Drumright, a mural shows The Wheeler #1 well, whose discovery ended up founding the town of Drumright. The mural shows the wood derrick, and surrounding well site. When oil was discovered in February 1912 by Thomas Slick, the Drumright area exploded with settlement and development, and the Wheeler #1 is still producing after 100 years.

This mural was painted by Scott Henderson of the famous Palmer group. Above the signature on the mural is a steel plate which reads:

Dedicated to the memory of:
Melvin "Cookie" Cook
Howard Cramer
R.O. "Bob" Crowder
Pete Swinea

We were not able to confirm who these gentlemen were and their connection with Drumright, and perhaps with the Wheeler #1.

Location: Downtown Drumright
