A small display in the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center shows several forms of iron ores found in the Great Lakes region. Abundant deposits of iron ore are found in the northern Great Lakes region, particularly in Michigan and Wisconsin.
The display shows the following forms of iron ore:
Hematite
Magnetite
Goethite
Specular Hematite
Taconite
Processed taconite pellets
It is worth noting that the the processed taconite pellets are the predominant form by which millions of tons of iron ores are shipped annually by rail and lake freighter to various steel-making facilities.
Admission to the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center is free by donation. The posted coordinates will bring you to the main entrance. For operating hours and more details see www.nglvc.org/ (
