[EN] "The devil's bet
When in Cologne the old cathedral was to be replaced by a more magnificent one, Master Gerhard von Ryle, who had studied the architecture of the cathedrals in France, was commissioned to submit a building plan within a year. He went to work in good spirits, but as often as he was sure he had found a feasible plan, new problems arose and he finally despaired. Then it happened that during a walk on the other side of the Rhine, completely filled with his worries, he fell asleep on a large boulder, which was popularly called 'Teufelsstein' (Devil's Stone).
When Master Gerhard awoke, a stranger, dressed like the French builders, stood in front of him. The stranger began with a stick to draw the lines of a building crack into the sand, in which Gerhard easily recognized the completed building plan for the cathedral. Astonished, Gerhard asked the stranger what he would have to leave him for this plan. The answer was: 'You yourself and if you add wife and child, I will help you to build this building in three years. But if I didn't finish the construction at the first cock's cry at the end of last night, you'll be free.' Not even the devil can erect such an enormous building within this period, Master Gerhard thought and took it.
The work on the cathedral construction site progressed in an unprecedented way. Day and night the building noise resounded, but the master builder of the cathedral became more and more wondrous. Soon it was rumoured that the construction site was not doing the right thing. This was also heard by the master builder of the cathedral. In response to her anxious question, Master Gerhard told her about the disastrous pact. Desperately, the woman thought of a way out. When she went to the market one day with her son, the child pointed to a magnificent cock and tried to imitate its cry. The wise woman was overjoyed to hear the child, for the way out of the desperate situation had been found. From then on she practiced the cockcrow at home until the cocks from all over the neighborhood answered her.
The last night of the third year had begun, when the cathedral master builder prayed to God for salvation and with the first dawn, just as the last spire was pulled up to the cathedral, she pushed out her cockcrow and from all sides the cocks of the neighbourhood answered loudly. The cathedral collapsed with a tremendous noise. But the master builder and his family were saved. But the cathedral was not completed until centuries later."
