The original Superlambanana sculpture is a bright yellow sculpture located in Liverpool. Weighing almost 8 tonnes and standing at 5.2 metres (17 feet) tall, it is intended to be a cross between a banana and a lamb and was designed by US-based Japanese artist Taro Chiezo. It currently stands in Tithebarn Street, outside the Liverpool John Moores University Avril Robarts Library/Learning Resource Centre.

Early in 2010, eight new two-metre-high replicas of Superlambanana, known as the "Eight for 08" were commissioned as a permanent piece of public art. They were initially placed on The Strand, in front of the Cunard and Liver Buildings. In October 2014, four of the 'Eight for 08' were relocated, three are situated outside the Museum of Liverpool, with Mandy Mandala Superlambanana in the museum itself.

"They are based on eight themes, including comedy, music, architecture and heroes, and have been created by artists who worked on the original parade in 2008.
One of the eight will act as an "ambassador" by making an appearance at the Liverpool pavilion at the World Expo in Shanghai in May, the council said.
Councillor Warren Bradley, leader of Liverpool City Council, said: ''We wanted to create an artistic legacy of what Liverpool enjoyed from being European Capital of Culture, something that captured the spirit of the year and the magic of the amazing creativity, and Go Superlambananas fits the bill perfectly.
''These Eight for 08 Superlambs will put a huge smile on everyone who sees them.
"The fact they have been inspired by designs by the people of Liverpool means they will serve as a vivid reminder of how they contributed to catapulting the city back on to the global stage so successfully.''"

"All of the new creations were inspired by entries in the ECHO’s Design a Superlambanana competition, with the themes aiming to reflect the character of the people of the city.
They will stand on the Strand for the next few weeks before being moved to a site near the new entrance of Lime Street Station.
One of the statues, Architecture, will also be included in the Liverpool Pavilion at the Shanghai Expo.
Council leader Warren Bradley said: “We wanted to create something that was a reminder of the magical year that was 08 and that captured the spirit of Capital of Culture.

“What better symbol of the year than the Superlambananas? They were, in many ways, the people’s highlight. And the people of Liverpool have influenced these designs.”
All the artists who worked on the new statues are from Liverpool.
The new Superlambananas are:
Comedy, created by artist Philip Marsden and inspired by ECHO reader Noah Kinvig’s Clowning Around.
Music, created by Vince Cleghorne and inspired by the Beatles Superlambanana, the design of PSS The Avenue Project, Childwall, in the ECHO competition. The bands depicted are part of a continuing thriving music culture in Liverpool.
Architecture, by Debbie Ryan, which came from three shortlisted entries – Cathedralambanana, by Alex Rigby; Merseytunnelambanana by Ian Parnell and AlbertSuperdockbanana, by Lynda J M Husband.
