The Ray mine began as the Mineral Creek Mining company in 1880. It was first named the Ray mine in 1883 and was purchased by Kennecott Copper in 1933. Open pit operations began in 1952 and the mine has grown to consume at least three small towns. The nearby town of Kearny was built in 1958 to house displaced workers. The copper ore is expected to run out in 2044. The operation is now owned by the ASARCO division of Grupo Mexico. As of 2014 250,000 tons a day of ore is removed.
