Po vydání Diokleciánových dekretu (303–304) nastaly krestanum v rímské ríši zlé casy. Jejich chrámy pohltily plameny, ohen strávil desítky a stovky vzácných rukopisu, a kdo se nezrekl nového náboženství, byl podroben nevýslovnému trýznení. Zahynuli svedkové víry jako biskup Maxmilián i dvanáctiletý Vít, stejne jako lécitelé Kosmas a Damián. Vyznavacka Irena a jáhen Vincenc byli upáleni, zbožné dívky Katerina, Dorotea a Agnes skoncily pod katovým mecem. Místy se bourili sami rímští vojáci, poverení nelidskými úkoly. Ani ti neušli trestu. Setník Šebestián byl ubodán šípy, velitele vojenské legie Mauritia popravili s celou desetinou jeho mužstva. Rozkazum se vzeprel i jistý rímský setník jménem Florián.
Dokonce krestanum pomáhal unikat stíhání, a když videl jejich odhodlanost a sílu presvedcení, sám nakonec uveril Kristu. Neodvolal ani pri mnohonásobném mucení. Privázali mu tedy ke krku težký kámen a utopili jej v rece Emži. A prece zvítezil on. At pohanští trýznitelé pálili kostely a knihy ze všech sil, at se rozhorely domy a pergamenové svitky se menily v prach, nepodarilo se jim znicit ducha, o nemž jejich obeti vydávaly svedectví. A tak rímský setník Florián svým poctivým životem, odvážnou vírou a nakonec i mucednickou smrtí uhasil nicivý požár lidské zloby a planoucí nenávisti. Ti, kdo uctívali jeho památku, vkládali mu do rukou nádobu vody života (Jan 4, 14), která hasí vyprahlost i zlo. Všechno ostatní (uhašení horícího domu modlitbou nebo jediným vedrem vody) jsou už jen pozdní legendy. Nicméne pro tento svuj atribut zustal už navždy patronem hasicu.

Whether pagan tormentors burned churches and books from all forces, whether flared houses and scrolls changed in dust, they were unable to destroy the spirit of which the victim testified. And the Roman centurion Florian his honest life, courageous faith and eventually martyred extinguish the wildfire of human malice and hatred blazing. Those who revered his memory, put their hands into his bowl of water of life (Jn 4, 14), which quenches aridity and evil. Everything else (to extinguish a burning house prayer or single bucket of water) are the only late legend. However, for this attribute his stay forever patron saint of firefighters.
