Cette immense fresque de 220 mètres carrés, d’inspiration renaissance italienne d’après l’oeuvre de Giambattista Tiepolo, fait référence à l'exploitation de l'Amérique à partir de 1492.

La fresque de style byzantin dépeint le débarquement au vieux port de Marseille d'un grand voilier revenant du Nouveau Monde, ramenant une cargaison de biens pillés ainsi que des amérindiens kidnappés pour les parader comme des animaux de foire aux monarques d'Europe. Les arcades au bas rappellent la Cathédrale de la Major qui est à proximité.
La redécouverte de l'Amérique par les européens eut lieu lors du débarquement sur ce Nouveau Monde d'une centaine d'explorateurs sous le commandement de l’italien Christophorus Columbus, dans la nuit du 11 au 12 octobre 1492.
Les 2 caravelles de style portugais La Pinta et La Nina ainsi que la caraque Santa Maria débarquent alors l’île caribéenne de Guanahani, au San Salvador d'aujourd'hui.
C'est alors la rencontre de civilisations ayant évolué séparément depuis 120 siècles, suite à la disparition du pont naturel de Bering. Se croyant aux Indes, dans sa recherche d'une nouvelle route vers l’Asie, Columbus donna aux autochtones le nom d'indiens.
La désignation Amérique viendra plus tard, après qu'un autre explorateur, Amerigo Vespucci, comprit que c'est en fait au tout autre continent.
Les envahisseurs européen eurent vite fait d'en surexploiter les ressources, sans égard à la population aborigène qu'ils pillèrent et affamèrent, la décimant de plusieurs dizaines de millions à leur arrivée jusqu'à un maigre quart de million en 4 siècles.

This huge mural of 220 square meters, of Italian Renaissance inspiration after the work of Giambattista Tiepolo, refers to the exploitation of America from 1492.
The Byzantine style fresco depicts the landing at the old port of Marseille of a great ship returning from the New World, bringing back a cargo of looted goods as well as Native Americans kidnapped to parade them like fair animals to the monarchs of Europe. The arcades at the bottom are reminiscent of the Major Cathedral which is nearby.
The rediscovery of America by the Europeans took place during the landing on this New World of a hundred explorers under the command of the Italian Christophorus Columbus, on the night of October 11 to 12, 1492.
The two Portuguese-style caravels La Pinta and La Nina as well as the Santa Maria caraque landed then on the Caribbean island of Guanahani, in today's San Salvador.
It was then the meeting of civilizations that had evolved separately for 120 centuries, following the disappearance of the natural bridge of Bering. Believing himself in India, in his search for a new route to Asia, Columbus gave the inhabitants the name of Indians.
The designation America will come later, after another explorer, Amerigo Vespucci, realized that it is in fact in another continent.
