The railroad ascended a grade of 3.9 percent to White Pass.
Workers worked around the clock for 40 months to build the railroad At least 35 workers were killed in construction accidents before the line was completed. On On Jul 21, 1898 the White Pass and Yukon Railway operated its first train from Skagway.
