"The windmill of St-Maxent was built on a" feudal mound "in the sixteenth century. This windmill on" pivot "or" pickaxe "with its intact wooden mechanism, dated the eighteenth century (1736-1739) , stopped grinding in 1943. It was listed as a Historic Monument in 1948. Oswald Cordier was the last miller and Léonce Cayeux the last "Cache-Manée".
Grind wheat, barley, rye, oats and other cereals for milling with wind energy. The milling is left in the state for the food of the animals, or "bluted" to obtain flour
The whole mill revolves around an axis (the pivot) resting on a foot composed of horizontal soles (placed on blocks of stone) and oblique links.
The tail, supporting the stairs giving access to the first floor, allows to position the mill in the wind axis. It was built entirely of oak, elm, chestnut for the roof and cormier or fruit. It is 16 meters high.
Its wings are 9 meters long and 1 meter wide. The miller garnished them with canvases of linen or hemp, coated with a tarred product, and they were more or less unfurled according to the force of the wind. They turn upside down clockwise.
The fastener extends the outer pivot inside the mill to the bed base, an essential structural beam that supports the second floor ceiling and the hanging cage of the mill. The set: cage mechanism, wings, tail and staircase (30 tons) pivots on the attack of 50 centimeters in diameter. "
