This is one of many such signs you'll find on the Historic Downtown Walking tour, and it reads:
c. 1890
Sampliner's Dry Goods
In the 1890s, Joseph and Albert Sampliner started a small business selling men's fine clothing from a pushcart. The Sampliner cousins purchased their goods from bankrupt dry good stores in the Red Mountain mining district.
The Sampliners opened Grand Junction's first fine men's clothing store at this location in 1895. The store expanded and became Rush-Sanford Clothing and finally Brownson's Clothing Store. The owners of the Rockslide Brewery were careful to maintain the historical integrity of the building when they opened their new restaurant and brewery in 1994.
