The Hampton Battery was a Pittsburgh-based artillery unit. It "lives on" as a Civil War re-enactment unit. Some history: Pittsburgh Battery 'F' was organized in October 1861 as a part of the Pennsylvania Light Artillery under the Command of Captain Robert B. Hampton. The unit was assigned to the Army of the Potomac under the command of Major General Banks. The battery was also assigned to Twelfth Corps under the command of General Slocum. After taking heavy losses, the battery was combined with Thompson's Battery 'C'.
Captain Hampton himself was a casualty, killed at the Battle of Chancellorsville. He is buried at Allegheny Cemetery in Lawrenceville.
Major Campaigns in which the Hampton Battery was involved:
* 2nd Bull Run VA (28 - 30 AUG 1862)
* Antietam VA 17 SEP 1862)
* Chancellorsville VA 1-4 MAY 1863)
* 2nd Winchester VA 14 - 15 JUN 1863)
* Gettysburg PA (1-3 JUL 1863)
* Mine Run Campaign VA (NOV - DEC 1863)
Other Engagements :
Dam No. 5, Kerntown, Woodstock, Mount Jackson, McGaugheysville, Second Newton, Luray, Cedar Mountain, Sulphur Springs, Chantilly, Charlestown, Winchester, White Hall Church, Hancock, Newtown, Edinburgh, Lacy's Springs, Fisher's Hill, Cedar Creek, Gaines' Cross Roads, Waterloo, Rappahannock Station, South Mountain, Berryville, Blackburn's Ford, Second Cedar Creek, Stony Creek, Harrisonburg, Strasburg, Front Royal, Freeman's Ford, Opequan, United States Ford, Morton's Ford.
The monument is a very dignified tribute to the artillerist. Listed on the monument are the names of its martyred members, and the unit's major engagements. Of the eighty men who were mustered into service on October 8, 1861, only 28 survived. All of the unit's first officers were killed and their names appear on the monument's pedestal in a larger size: Hampton, Geary, Todd and Miller.
At the base of the monument is a Spanish Cannon, cast in 1845 and captured at Santiago Cuba in 1898 during the Spanish American War. This is waymarked under "Static Artillery Displays."
