The small town of Balfron is situated fifteen miles west of Stirling in central Scotland. On the northern approach to the town on the A875 Kepculloch Road, a cairn-like structure is situated on a grassy island in front of the approach to the church. This is the First World War Memorial which was built in 1922.
The memorial was by architect W A Robertson of Glasgow, designed by Archibald Dawson of Glasgow School of Art, and built by masons Messrs Simpson at a cost of £450 by public subscription.
It was unveiled on January 29th 1922 attended by the Duke of Montrose and dedicated by parish minister the Rev. Archibald MacBengie.
It takes the form of a tall cairn with an inserted bronze tablet depicting a sculpted tree of life and a sacrificial pelican and her young. The inscription on the tablet reads as follows:
'IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THE PARISH OF BALFRON WHO IN THE WAR GAVE UP THEIR LIVES FOR HONOUR AND FREEDOM' A total of thirty two names are listed along with rank, with underneath 'THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE' An additional five names were added underneath from World War II.
