We are all familiar with the beginning of the Gettysburg Address, given by Abraham Lincoln on November 19, 1863 - "Four score and seven years ago..." Another portion of that Address is engraved into a granite plaque and set in a concrete Walk of Honor in front of the Donaldson-Walker American Legion Post 108.
The Gettysburg Address was given at the dedication of Soldier's National Cemetery, for Union soldiers who died at the Battle of Gettysburg. As this American Legion Post gathered to dedicate their Walk of Honor to fallen veterans, they used Lincoln's words to capture the solemnity of the moment.
But, in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate - we cannot consecrate - we cannot hallow - this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract Abraham Lincoln - 1863
