"Against the north wall of the chapel is a canopied Renaissance marble monument, with recumbent effigy, to Charles Noel, second son of Sir Andrew Noel, who died in 1619, aged 28. The figure is in plate armour and above the cornice is a large circular strapwork panel with the arms and crest of Noel. On the wall behind the figure is a Latin inscription, which translates as follows:
Charles, son of Andrew Noel, brave and high
his dust inhabits here his soul the sky
Mature and Worth, Valour and Wisdom too
in this one boy strove all their gifts to show.
Worth made him duteous: Nature a comley youth.
Mars to be brave: Bright Wisdom, loving truth.
Yet even he in youth’s fair Springtime pined
As Buds will perish in a bitter wind
He died in 1619 at the age of 28 years.R.I.P.and on the pedestal a rhyming English inscription on two panels:
If giftes of minde and body
might make death forbeare to clame his right,
this complete knighte had not by fate
enjoyed on earth so short a date
But death not partiall in his power,
untimely cropt this blooming flower,
whose hopefull youth scarce in her prime
did promise much for future time The colours on the monument are still good."
