Hard work by community action groups and local government resulted in the entire East Allegheny neighborhood being designated as a Historic District. This school is one of the centerpieces. Formerly a "White Elephant" since closing down in favor of more modern school buildings, it's been transformed into nice apartments called "The School House."
The Latimer School is itself listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1915, this became the very first "junior high school" in the Pittsburgh area.
