Long Description:
During the industrial revolution a number of water powered mills were built alongside the River Tame. In order to mange the water flow each mill had its own associated weir built.

"Gibraltar Weir was built to power Gibraltar Mill, which was a cotton mill built on the left bank of the river Tame in Apethorn, Hyde, between Apethorn and Haughton Dale. It was built in the late 18th century and it was demolished in the 1960s." link

The Trans Pennine Trail is a national trail that crosses the UK from Southport to Hornsea. The trail is a combined cycle way, footpath and bridle path for horses. It makes use of many river path, canals, converted railways and other paths wherever possible. At this point it is following the route of the River Tame.
