During the industrial revolution a number of water powered mills were built alongside the River Tame. In order to mange the water flow each mill had its own associated weir built.

"Haughton Dale Weir was probably built in the late 18th century to power Haughton Dale Cotton Mill, which was built alongside the right bank of the river Tame at the downstream end of a wide loop in the river. The weir was built across the river just below the start of the loop and the headrace was cut from above the weir directly across the loop to the mill." link

The Trans Pennine Trail is a national trail that crosses the UK from Southport to Hornsea. The trail is a combined cycle way, footpath and bridle path for horses. It makes use of many river path, canals, converted railways and other paths wherever possible. At this point it is following the route of the River Tame.
