Begun in 1884 when it was determined that a lighthouse was needed between Cape Canaveral and Saint Augustine, Mosquito Bay was chosen as the best spot because of its strong currents and shifting sandbars. The name of the area was soon changed to Ponce Inlet and the 175 foot tall lighthouse which was built with over one million bricks shipped from Maryland and New York was activated in 1887.
In 1970, the US Coast Guard installed a beacon light on the south side of the inlet and abandoned the lighthouse. The people of the town of Ponce Inlet convinced the local government to purchase the grounds and it was turned into a museum.
