Over 4500 animals from 500 species are housed in this 55-acre zoo. The Wortham World of Primates features species from Asia, South America and Africa. The displays of tigers, lions, prairie dogs, and giraffes are particularly well-done. The Children’s Zoo is a large area, covering six ecosystems and including a petting zoo. The zoo also has an aquarium, reptile house, a carousel and a tropical bird house.
The rear entrance to the zoo, at N29 42.742 W095 23.594, is only open weekends. If you’re having trouble finding a place to park near the front entrance, try the Ben Taub Hospital garage directly across from this entrance. Here you’ll also find the Pioneer Memorial Loghouse, built by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.
