Al Fulton's tombstone is a flat rock propped against a tree. Carved into it is Al Fulton Shot 1901. The grave is covered with rocks. The Mogollon Rim is the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau. From the rim, at 7500', the land drops to the Sonoran Desert at 1300'. The rim area provided grazing for cattle and sheep in the late Nineteenth century. Most accounts state that Al was herding his sheep across a rancher's range and fell off his horse when the rancher chased the sheep. The alternative story is that he was caught and hung in 1888 along with three other sheep herder's in the area. Apparently the story has been changed to a shooting to discourage too much investigation.
