The first golf club in the area was formed as the Markinch Golf Club in 1905, playing over a nine hole course. After the rigours of World War II, the club folded in 1947, but the club trophies were kept in safe storage. In the early eighties the Glenrothes Development Corporation purchased the nearby Balbirnie Estate and nine holes were opened in April 1983, a second nine opening the following year. The clubhouse was extended in 1995 and the pro shop opened in 1996.
The course runs over undulating parkland within the grounds of Balbirnie House, situated west of Markinch, and east of the large town of Glenrothes in central Fife. The front nine is to the south and the back nine to the north of the two storey clubhouse. The par 71 features four short holes and three par fives, including the downhill final hole with a stream fronting the green.
The golf course and park are signposted from the A92 road that runs through the centre of Fife, the golf course lies to the east of the road between Glenrothes and Markinch.
