"Mount Mazama with its Crater Lake, is one of a thousand potentially active Volcanoes that ring the Pacific. For nearly half a million years, the great 12000 foot volcano stood here with its summit 5000 feet above the spot when you are standing! It was composed of an irregular complex of volcanic cones and domes. The landmarks on the caldera rim are the surviving remnants of these features.

What happened here? The mountain issued a number of warnings of the pending eruption in the preceding centuries. Lava flowes and smaller eruptions were evidence of thr active turmoil beneath Mount Mazama. During its cataclysmic eruption nearly 8000 years ago, about 12 cubic miles of magma erupted out and dispersed thousands of miles to the northeast. An equal amount of material collapsed from the summit , forming a caldera. In today's terms, 12 cubic miles of material would be enough to cover Oregon eight inches deep in ash."
