Byrrh is a vermouth (a wine with mistelle added and essentially flavoured with quinquina) created in Thuir, Pyrénées-Orientales, France, in 1866. From 1903 onwards, the brand organised a series of very dynamic advertising campaigns in both urban and rural areas. Posters, postcards,
painted walls
, buses, subways, advertising objects, promoting brand recognition.
The Germanic sound of this drink whose name however comes from a colour chart of fabrics (!) slows down its consumption during the First World War.
After the Second World War, natural sweet wines (Banyuls, Muscats de Frontignan or Rivesaltes, etc.), benefiting from tax advantages, supplanted Byrrh, which was out of fashion.
In 1977 the family business, divided by dissension, was bought by the Cusenier company and since then has belonged to the Pernod-Ricard group.
If it is not possible to date this painting precisely, we know that the company only produced it between 1903 and 1939.
