Impressive statue of Christopher Columbus, unveiled on Columbus Day, 1958. It was a donation from the city's Italian Community.
The sculptor was Gaetano Chiaramonte of Naples, Italy.
The marble base has the following incised:
CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS
Born Genoa Italy 1451
Died Valladolid Spain 1506
The back of the base reads:
Erected through the efforts of the
Community's citizens of Italian
Origin and donated to the city
Of Atlantic City by the
Columbus Day Committee
John B. Baratta
October 12, 1958 General Chairman
The statue was moved to its current location in 2013 to make room for the Bass Pro Shops complex. it currently stands at the end of that Atlantic City Expressway at Arctic Avenue.
In 1991 the statue had its arm broken off in an act of vandalism. Caesar's Atlantic city covered the cost of restoration.
