The sign says, "This district was named after Alexander Hamilton, first United States secretary of the treasury, whose country house (designed in 1801 by John McComb, Jr., architect of New York City Hall) stood near west 143rd Street. The area was built up between 1886 and 1906. The creation of the west side elevated railroad at that time made the area easy to each from lower Manhattan. The row houses in the neighborhood reflect a variety of historical styles of architecture. The circular street pattern of Hamilton terrace makes it a protected enclave reflecting turn of the century residential city planning".
