Each winter my family knows that spring is right around the corner when we see the opening dates for Boehinger's Ice Cream. There is nothing like heading to this little roadside restaurant, standing in line inside to place your order, taking it out to one of the highly varnished picnic tables by the creek and watching the many species of ducks float by while you enjoy your meal.
Boehinger's is a 70 plus year old family owned cash only business. Their menu includes many typical sandwiches, our family favorites are the California burger and the hamburg bar-b-q. But their specialty is, of course, their home made hard ice cream. No soft ice cream or yogurts here, just many flavors of delicious hard ice cream which they serve in milkshakes, floats, sundaes, cones and cups. What looks like massive confusion when you enter this restaurant for the first time is really organized chaos. Their policy is to place your order at one of the four windows and then step back to wait while other orders are being taken. Boehinger's must employ at least 30 teens who run from window to window ensuring that everyone's orders have been taken. The thing that is truly amazing is that these kids take your order and then may take ten more but when they bring your food to the counter, they always look you in the eye and tell you your order is ready. How do they remember all this?? One can watch their burgers being made if you are at just the right window.
After enjoying your sandwich and fries and their very special drink, birch beer, while watching the ducks in the Little Muddy Creek, head back in to the ice cream only window and place your order for the perfect dessert. We can highly recommend the dusty road sundaes which come with mounds of whipped cream and a cherry on top.
Be sure to check your calendar before you head to Boehinger's as they are a seasonal restaurant, usually open from sometime in April through sometime in September. They are closed on Mondays in spring and summer. Boehinger's doesn't have an official website so I have included a blogger's review site below.
