Colonel Elizabeth Laurie Smellie, Canada's Matron-in-Chief during the Second World War, became the first Canadian woman to be promoted to the rank of Colonel. The plaque is located in the Hall of Honour, inside the Canadian War Museum.

Canada's Matron-in-Chief
Colonel Smellie was a distinguished nursing sister who was mentioned in Despatches. She was Matron-in-Chief in the Canadian Medical Army Corps during the Second World War. In 1941, she took a leave of four months to supervise the organization of the Canadian Women's Army Corps (CWAC). She was the first Woman to be promoted to the rank of Colonel.
