[GER] Über dem Haupteingang, rechts von der Koppel sitzt ein gefügelter Drache. Der Bezwinger, der seinen linken Arm beim Kampf eingebüßt hat sitzt auf der Schulter des Drachen.
Das Gebäude wurde von den im Hamburger Stadtteil St. Georg ist mit 1200 Plätzen das größte Sprechtheater Deutschlands. Entstanden ist es durch eine private Initiative von Hamburger Bürgern und der 1899 gegründeten „Aktiengesellschaft Deutsches Schauspielhaus“.
Die Pläne stammen von dem Wiener Architekturbüro Fellner und Helmer, die das neobarocke Gebäude nach dem Vorbild des Wiener Volkstheaters gestalteten. Am 15. September 1900 wurde das Theater mit einer Aufführung der Iphigenie auf Tauris feierlich eröffnet.
[ENG] Above the main entrance, to the right of the dome, sits a winged dragon. The conqueror, who lost his left arm in the fight, sits on the dragon's shoulder.
The building was built by the Hamburg district of St. Georg and is Germany's largest theatre with 1200 seats. It was created by a private initiative of Hamburg citizens and the "Aktiengesellschaft Deutsches Schauspielhaus", founded in 1899.
The plans were drawn up by the Viennese architects Fellner and Helmer, who designed the neo-baroque building on the model of the Vienna Volkstheater. On September 15, 1900, the theatre was officially opened with a performance of Iphigenia on Tauris.
