" Founded in 1842 by Semurese scholars, the Society was originally involved in the natural sciences. The interest generated by his work will quickly lead him to extend his field of activity to the historical sciences and begin as early as 1864 the publication of a bulletin.
The Society, through several of its members, takes an active part in the development of the municipal museum of Semur-en-Auxois to which it bequeaths in particular a mineralogical collection rich of more than 10000 pieces.
Composed of recognized scientists and renowned scholars, the Company was at the beginning of the twentieth century, the origin of the resumption of excavations on the site of Alesia. Since 1904, the company has put the safeguard and promotion of this site on its permanent agenda. Major archaeological excavations were carried out between 1906 and 1914.
The material resulting from these excavations is presented in the museum of Alésia. The Company, which was recognized as a public utility by decree of July 10, 1908, currently has more than 300 members."
The headquarters of the Society of Historical and Natural Sciences of Semur-en-Auxois is located in the Tower of Orle d'Or. The largest of the towers, the Lourdeault Tower or the Orle d'Or, 44.30 m high, with walls of 2.50 m thick at the top. Circle of metal that hemmed, ie adorned the tower and shined like gold.

La Société, à travers plusieurs de ses membres, prend une part active au développement du musée municipal de Semur-en-Auxois auquel elle lègue notamment une collection minéralogique riche de plus de 10000 pièces.
Composée de savants reconnus et d'érudits de renoms, la Société est, au début du XXe siècle, à l'origine de la reprise des fouilles sur le site d'Alésia. Depuis 1904, la société a mis la sauvegarde et la promotion du ce site à son ordre du jour permanent. D'importantes fouilles archéologiques ont été réalisées entre 1906 et 1914.
Le matériel issu de ces fouilles est présenté dans le musée d'Alésia. La Société qui a été reconnue d’utilité publique par décret du 10 juillet 1908, compte actuellement plus de 300 membres."
