The railway station in the small highland village of Dalwhinnie was opened in 1863 and the station buildings completed in 1864 by Joseph Mitchell & Co. Situated halfway between Perth and Inverness, it is the highest mainline station in the UK.

There are two platforms with station buildings, signal box and a footbridge. There are five daily departures on weekdays in both directions to Inverness, Perth, Edinburgh Waverley, and Glasgow Queen Street. The Caledonian Sleeper picks up southbound only between Inverness and London Euston. On Sunday a small number of trains call between Inverness and Edinburgh.

The station can be found on the western side of the village in Ben Alder Road.
