At the market square in Menden there is a statue of a donkey at a green area next to the bus stops.
The sculpture was created in the 1980s by Heide Dobberkau.

The "Heuesel" (Hay Donkey) may be called the "heraldic animal" of Menden. The origin lies in the fact that the donkeys were allowed to recover from the work at Drachenfels (used for stone transport, among other things) on the "Mendener Eselsweiden" (pasture for the donkeys).
