On June 2nd 2018 the ISS passed within view of Winnipeg Manitoba but was unseen due to heavy cloud cover. Minutes later it passed within view of Ontario Canada where it was observed by Bon Echo

For this sighting I decided to head to Battlefield Park in Stoney Creek Ontario as this location would allow for good unobstructed views to the west-southwest. The park was empty at that late hour. The evening was comfortably warm, breezeless, and the skies were perfectly cloudless. The stars were as visible as they can be within the city lights, and there was no moon.

I first located the ISS at exactly 23:17:26 Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), almost exactly 2 minutes after the predicted rise time of 23:15:29 EDT for my location, and about 8 seconds before the ISS was predicted to reach an altitude of 10° for my location. The ISS appeared to travel straight over my location (and with a bit of trigonometry and using an average ISS height of 400 kilometers, I estimate that the station passed about 42kms south of my location), and it grew increasingly brighter. While watching the pass I estimated the point at which the ISS must be at the maximum predicted altitude for this pass (84°) and I took a screenshot to record the time, without looking to see what the time was. The time of screenshot was only 1 second ahead of the actual predicted time for the maximum altitude (23:20:50)! I watched the well-lit ISS continue on its path for another 10-12 seconds before it began to enter the shadow of the earth. The ISS went from being well-lit (brightness was predicted to be -4.0 at the max altitude) to completely unlit in a matter of 2-4 seconds, and at exactly 11:21:05 the ISS was no longer visible. The ISS was predicted to enter the earth’s shadow at 23:20:54 EDT.

In all I observed the ISS for 3 minutes and 39 seconds, from just a bit below 10° altitude, to a maximum of 84°, and until it entered the earth’s shadow at an altitude of around 83°.

My partner for this ISS sighting was Peter and Gloria in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The ISS was predicted to pass just south of Winnipeg. It would have been visible to them from 22:13:56 Central Daylight Time (CDT) until 22:20:28 CDT with a maximum altitude of 77° at 22:17:12 CDT. Unfortunately the skies over that Winnipeg were completely clouded over and they were unable to see the ISS. This sighting would have represented the first time the ISS has been waymarked (in this category) by two players in different parts of Canada. The distance between Winnipeg and Hamilton is 1519 kilometers and there is a one-hour time difference between the two locations.
