Take the Malad Gorge State Park exit from I-84. Turn north to Old Malad River Highway. Turn left on Old Malad River Hwy for .7 mi. Turn north at N42 51.941 W114 50.971. Parking area is just 280' from paved road.
"The site of the Malad River Way Station was a quarter mile upriver from the parking area for this historic spot. The early6 Oregon Trail emigrants forded the Malad River about one quarter mile farther upstream from the way station prior to its construction.
The Kelton Road was 232 miles long with 19 way stations of which the Malad Station was the eighth way station from Boise.
With the completion of the Oregon Short Line RR to Shoshone, ID, this local segment of the Kelton Road became the freight wagon route from the railroad stop at Bliss to the Hagerman Valley and the settlements on Three Creek near the NV border. The Malad Way Station was located on the north side of the gorge near the bridge which was built over the gorge at the first place deep enough to contain all the water from the spring run off. Presend day evidence of the way station can be seen only as some faint outlines of foundations, remnants of the bridge abutments, and wagon wheel ruts worn into the lava rock." (Taken from the Information Board in the parking area.)
There are numerous trails, some faint, throughout the area. In the summer months some people use the deeper pools of the Malad River to cool off from the desert heat. As always, when exploring desert country, be aware of critters that could spoil your day!
