A 25' high granite monument contains a 6' high figure of a Union soldier standing at parade rest. The soldier is wearing a knee length overcoat with a cape and is holding a musket vertically, with both hands on the barrel with his left hand above his right.
The shaft has two rings with the names of Civil War battles inscribed in raised letters. The upper ring is inscribed:
PETERSBURG - BATON ROUGE - BULL RUN - NEWBERN
and the lower ring is inscribed:
GETTTYSBURG - CEDAR MTN. - CHANCELLORSVILLE - LOOKOUT MTN.
On the front of the monument is a sculpture of an eagle with its wings spread perched a shield.
The front of the monument contains the dedication:
BILLERICA TO HER HEROES,
IN GRATEFUL RECOGNITION OF THAT
STEADFASTNESS OF PURPOSE,
DEVOTION TO PRINCIPLE,
LOYALTY TO COUNTRY,
AND
TRUST IN GOD,
WHICH ENABLED BRAVE MEN TO DIE
FOR LIBERTY AND UNION
