The town of Hennessey is located on Highway 81, roughly the route of the old Chisholm Trail. Pat Hennessey was an Irish freighter who traveled the Trail. The massacre of Pat Hennessey is a well known local story about this freighter and his men being brutally murdered along the trail. The marker indicates it was done by Indians, however, a differing story by others indicates the culprits were white horse theieves disguised as Indians.
This marker was placed by the Oklahoma Historical Society and the Oklahoma Highway Commission in 1957.
