"You will find on this map all the information necessary for a beautiful walk in this forest (path, paths, ....). The Polygon wood (in Dutch: Polygoonbos or Doelbos) is, after the Soignes forest, the oldest forest in Belgium.
The wood covers an area of about 68 hectares and is located 1.6 km south of the village of Zonnebeke in West Flanders. The wood is mainly composed of conifers but, in recent years, hardwoods have also been planted.
The wood was completely devastated during the First World War. You can still find vestiges of the conflict as remains of bunkers. At the end of October 1914, German troops were shot out of the woods by the British Army. But on May 3, 1915, the British troops abandoned it to the German soldiers during the second battle of Ypres.
In September 1917, the 5th Australian Division took over the wood. During the German offensive of the spring of 1918, the wood was once again abandoned by the Allies, but on September 28, 1918, it was definitely conquered by the 9th Scottish Division.
Since 1972, the wood is open to the public."

Le bois s'étend sur une surface d'environ 68 hectares et se situe à 1,6 km au sud du village de Zonnebeke en Flandre-Occidentale. Le bois est surtout composé de conifères mais, ces dernières années, des feuillus ont également été plantés.
Le bois fut entièrement dévasté durant la Première Guerre mondiale. On peut encore y trouver des vestiges du conflit comme des restes de bunkers. Fin octobre 1914, les troupes allemandes furent boutées hors du bois par l'Armée britannique. Mais le 3 mai 1915, les troupes britanniques l'abandonnèrent aux soldats allemands lors de la seconde bataille d'Ypres.
En septembre 1917, la 5e division australienne reprit le bois. Pendant l'offensive allemande du printemps 1918, le bois fut une nouvelle fois abandonné par les Alliés, mais le 28 septembre 1918, il fut définitivement conquis pas la 9e division écossaise.
Depuis 1972, le bois est ouvert au public."

"Je vindt op deze kaart alle informatie die je nodig hebt voor een mooie wandeling in dit bos (pad, paden, ....). Het Polygoonbos (Polygoonbos of Doelbos) is, na het bos van Soignes, het meest oud nationaal bos van België.
Het hout beslaat een oppervlakte van ongeveer 68 hectare en ligt 1,6 km ten zuiden van het dorp Zonnebeke in West-Vlaanderen. Het hout bestaat voornamelijk uit coniferen, maar de laatste jaren zijn ook hardhout geplant.
Het hout was volledig verwoest tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Je kunt nog steeds overblijfselen van het conflict vinden als overblijfselen van bunkers. Eind oktober 1914 werden Duitse troepen door het Britse leger uit het bos geschoten. Maar op 3 mei 1915 gaven de Britse troepen het over aan de Duitse soldaten tijdens de tweede slag om Ieper.
In september 1917 nam de 5e Australische divisie het hout over. Tijdens het Duitse offensief van de lente van 1918 werd het hout opnieuw door de geallieerden verlaten, maar op 28 september 1918 werd het definitief veroverd door de 9e Schotse divisie.
