A life-size granite figure of a Union soldier stands on a 15' by 7' square three-tiered granite base with a sculpted cannon at each corner. The soldier is wearing a cap, knee-length overcoat with a cape. He stands at parade rest holding a rifle vertically by the muzzle with his left hand over his right. the monument was sculpted by O.E. Owen and fabricated by the St. Johnsbury Granite Company.
The front of the base is inscribed:

A.D. 1879.
TO THE MEMORY
OF THE SOLDIERS OF THE TOWN OF
WALLKILL
THE WAR OF THE REBELLION
1861 - 1865
On sides of base near the bottom are the inscriptions:
WALLKILL'S TRIBUTE TO
