A true gem of the eventful history of the Eifel: a Celtic refuge could be proved here by individual finds from the time around 700 B.C.. Later, a fortified Roman control room stood on the site, as can be deduced from the discovery of a tomb.
The castle was destroyed several times, last in the Palatinate War of Succession in 1689 by French troops of Louis XIV, like most of the Eifel castles. Today, only a ring wall and a handicraft tower with loopholes remain of the former castle, probably more than 1000 years old.
The Amtshaus, the hunting lodge of Elector Charles III Joseph of Lorraine, is now used as a hotel. Below the castle there are several restored Burgmannen houses, which are also listed as historical Monuments."
