EN In the 5th century, when the Roman Empire disintegrated, the monks of the Abbey of Saint-Victor de Marseille settled in Pays d'Aygues. In the 7th century, they build a chapel whose entrance is still visible in a wall of the nave.
In 732, the Saracens plunder the priory, the inhabitants take refuge on the heights and the surviving monks return to Marseilles. It follows a long silence of 300 years.
In 1045, Rostang de Cadenet gives "the chapel, its lands and its vineyard" to the religious recalled to Cadenet.
In 1165, the Count of Toulouse destroyed the chapel and burned the village following the battles for power between Princes du Midi.
On February 11, 1173, the foundation stone of the new church is laid down by decision of the inhabitants themselves. At the same time, the Cistercians build Senanque and Silvacane.
The plague of 1351 interrupts the work that does not end until the sixteenth century.
On the tower of the tower you can read an inscription engraved in the stone: «1538 AND 21 of Mars MR STIENE BONESILHE ", it is the" signature "of the prior who had it built.
The Romanesque belfry, dating from 1680, falling into ruins is replaced in 1844 by an octagonal concrete bell tower that detaches a bit of everything. Renovated in 1996 it receives a fourth bell called "Marie-Mireille" which sounds in D sharp.
The other three sound in F, in La and in C
There remain three gargoyles representing pride, gluttony and lust but there must be seven, one on each buttress, for the seven deadly sins.
On the main facade we can still guess the Republican inscription.
