"Danton, l'une des principales figures de la Révolution française, trône au beau milieu de la place Jean-Jaurès. Depuis l'inauguration de sa statue, le 29 novembre 1903, le monument semble indéboulonnable. L'index rageur ce grand tribun a l'air de lancer son fameux : «De l'audace, encore de l'audace, toujours de l'audace».
Alors, pourquoi pas ? L'œuvre de bronze signée d'un sculpteur vicquois, Edmond Desca, pourrait, en effet, être déplacée. Cette possibilité a été évoquée par Gérard Trémège, le maire de Tarbes, précisant qu'il a demandé à José Cubéro, historien et conseiller d'opposition, d'y réfléchir. C'était le jour où le conseiller auprès du ministre du Tourisme d'Argentine est venu annoncer que ce pays offre un monument à l'effigie du tango. La sculpture en question sera installée au parc Chastellain, apprend-on. Pour en revenir à Danton, le maire évoque la possibilité de réaliser un vaste espace devant la mairie. Cependant, «aucune décision n'a été prise», insiste-t-il.
José Cubéro, pour sa part, argumente que la statue est emblématique de la ville. De plus, un Vicquois en est l'auteur. Il rappelle, en outre, que Danton a été «promu héros positif de la Révolution sous la IIIe République» et que les volontaires partant à Valmy ont propagé «La Marseillaise». Remarque du maire qui tombe comme un couperet : «Il ne faut pas oublier que Danton a fait couper des têtes». Mais, très vite, il ajoute : «J'ai pris acte de ce que dit José Cubéro».
Au pays du rugby, on racontait, autrefois, que le bras levé de Danton invitait les Tarbais à se rendre au café se trouvant dans la direction désignée : l'ancien siège du Stadoceste. Une autre façon de revisiter l'Histoire."
