This pillar is situated on a rolling ridge 309 metres high in the Sidlaw Hills 3 miles south-east of the village of Glamis, and 5 miles south-west of the town of Forfar. The Sidlaw Hills run east from Perth and head into Angus to the north of Dundee where they are at their highest at Craigowl Hill. From there a spur heads to the north-west, ending abruptly above the valley of the Kerbet. The pillar is situated on one of the rolling summits, although not the highest point of the ridge. The pillar is in good condition, if a little rutted, and sits in a grassy field. The views are excellent in clear conditions, especially north-west to the mountains, and south-east to the North Sea coast.

STEEPNESS: Quite a climb from any direction, the route from the south-west at Lumley Den involves a very steep ascent up the side of Finlarg Hill for the first few hundred yards before becoming easier higher up. Once on the ridge the only a minor rise has to be negotiated.

TERRAIN: A mixture of grass and heather depending on the side of the fence that runs along the top. Heather with a path cut through is on the left, Variable grass is on the right.

ACCESSIBILITY: The only way to the pillar that does not cross farmland is from the A926 road at Lumley Den a mile and a half to the south-west. This is the highest point that a road crosses the Sidlaws at 250 metres. A lay-by on the twisty road lies just south-east of the highest point and across from here it is a short, sharp climb straight up the hill opposite to gain the ridge.

NAVIGATION: From Finlarg Hill just west of the summit, two fences run right along the high ground all the way to Kincaldrum Hill. Heather moorland is to the left, a grassy path lies between, and to the right is a barbed-wire fence with grassy pasture beyond. This continues all the way for over a mile, crossing an unnamed top on the way. The pillar lies beyond the barbed-wire fence on the right, but there are sufficient holes in the fence nearby. In clear conditions the pillar can be seen from a long distance away.

DANGER: The very steep climb up from the road, the barbed-wire fence and the odd gate to be climbed.
