Long Description:
The Zappeion traces its Olympic roots to 1869, when approval for its construction "in support of the Olympic Games" was granted by the Greek government. The cornerstone was laid in 1874, and the building opened in 1888.

In 1896, the Zappeion hosted the Fencing Competition during the first Olypmpic Games of the Modern ERA. The Foil event was won by a Frenchman, and the Sabre and Masters Foil were won by Greeks. The Epee event was cancelled, for unknown reasons.

During the 2004 Athens games the Zappeion served as the Press Centre.

The palace is still in use today for both ceremonial and conferece occasions.
