This mural took a boring brick wall on the side of a municipal parking garage and transformed it into a cheery welcome sign for Pittsburgh's cultural district.

Go to the tiny triangle of land formed by the odd-shaped intersection of Liberty Avenue, Smithfield Street and Seventh Avenue. Across Seventh Avenue, you'll see a towering parking garage, the old "Gimbels Garage" for those of you who have lived in Pittsburgh since the 1980's. It's always been a pretty ugly parking garage.
Along came the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust to the rescue. They recognized that this intersection, and the parking garage, formed one of the "gateways" to Pittsburgh's cultural district, and ought to be spruced up with some public art. Park here and walk to the Benedum Theater to see the Civic Light Opera, or go to Wood Street Galleries to see an abstract art exhibit, or have dinner with the high society crowd at the Duquesne Club.
The mural commissioned here for this six-story brick wall does a fine job in portraying a very futuristic vision of the cultural district. It reminds me of "The Jetsons"!
