The Catholic Kings was the denomination that received the spouses Fernando II of Aragon and Isabel I of Castile, sovereigns of the Crown of Castile (1474-1504) and the Crown of Aragon (1479-1516).
The kings agreed to the throne of Castile after the War of Castilian Succession (1475-1479) against the supporters of Princess Juana, nicknamed "the Beltraneja", daughter of King Henry IV of Castile. In 1479 Fernando inherited the throne of Aragon when his father, King Juan II of Aragon, died. Isabel and Fernando reigned together until her death in 1504. Then Fernando remained only as king of Aragon, passing Castile to his daughter Juana, nicknamed "the Crazy", and her husband, Philip of Austria, nicknamed "the Beautiful", Archduke of Austria, Duke of Burgundy and Count of Flanders, belonging to the House of Habsburg. Nevertheless Fernando did not resign to control Castile and, after dying Felipe in 1506 and to be declared Juana incapable, was able to be named regent of the kingdom until his death in 1516.
Spanish historiography considers the reign of the Catholic Kings as the transition from the Middle Ages to the Modern Age. With their marriage bond they were provisionally united, in the dynasty of the Trastámara, two crowns: the Crown of Castile and the Crown of Aragon giving birth to the Hispanic Monarchy and, supported by the cities and the small nobility, established a strong monarchy in front of the power desires of ecclesiastics and nobles. This dynastic union was characterized by the fact that the sovereignty, norms and institutions of each kingdom and crown were maintained. With the conquest of the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada, the Kingdom of Navarre, the Canary Islands, Melilla and other African squares, they managed to control all of the territories that today form Spain - except for Ceuta and Olivenza, which then belonged to Portugal. .
The Kings established a common foreign policy marked by marriage links with several royal families in Europe, of which the Austrian Habsburg House stands out. When Fernando died in 1516, his grandson Carlos I then took possession of the throne. This opened the door to the hegemony of the Habsburgs during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, until 1714.
On the other hand, the colonization of America, in 1492, profoundly modified world history.
