Lute Olsen born September 22, 1934 in Mayville, North Dakota. Played basketball in high school under the legendary coach Father Blaine Cook of ST. Mary's Parish. Then attended Augsburg University in Minneapolis, Minnesota. From there he coached high school basket ball -13 seasons in Mahnomen and Two Harbors, Minnesota. and Anaheim and Huntington Beach, California. For four years he coached at Long Beach City College before joining the NCAA coaching ranks in 1973.
While at Long Beach He to an undefeated record and Big West championship.
Coached at Iowa from 1974-1983. His record was 167-91 (.647). 1960 a trip to the Final Four but lost to Louisville. Leading the Hawkeyes to 5 Straight NCAA Tournament appearances and to the Sweet Sixteen in 1983. He left Iowa because he said, "Life there had become a "fishbowl" and needed a change."So off to coach at University of Arizona.
Olson was voted Pac-10 Coach of the Year seven times, made 5 Final Four appearances and won the 1997 NCAA championship with Arizona, where his team accomplished the feat of defeating three #1 seeds in the same tournament.
He made stars of Steve Kerr, Mike Bibby, Damon Staoudamire to name a few..
Lute married Roberta "Bobbi" Russell in 1953. they were married for 47 years and had 5 children. She past away in 2001 of ovarian cancer at the age of 65.
Married Christine Jack Toretti..In 2007 filed for divorce.
