When the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints first entered the Salt Lake Valley they built a simple bowery under which they held services. Shortly thereafter they constructed an Assembly Hall which vastly improved worshipping conditions. The Assembly Hall still proudly stands today within the Temple Square complex. No longer a house of regular services, it now serves as an overflow facility during the biannual church conferences. At the time of the original photo, the temple was under construction and granite slabs were stored around the grounds. They are evident in the original photo.
