The Robert E. Lee Boyhood Home (noted in the Historic American Buildings Survey as the Potts-Fitzhugh House), built in 1795, is a distinguished example of Federal period architecture. For nine years in the early 19th century the house was occupied by the young family of General Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee, celebrated cavalry officer of the American Revolution and author of the famous tribute to Washington: "First in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen." Lee's son, Robert E. Lee, future leader of the Confederate States of America, prepared here for his entrance to the United States Military Academy. Now a private home, the building remains among the most impressive of Alexandria's Federal era houses. While the house was once open as a museum for tours, it is now a private residence.
