On February 15, 1863, Private John Vale was a member of a sixteen-man detachment charged with guarding a wagon train that came under attack by 125 Confederate cavalrymen. Despite being severely outnumbered, the sixteen Union soldiers fought heroically to defend the wagons, and successfully repelled the attacking enemy, thereby saving the train from destruction or capture. Ten of these brave soldiers, including Private Vale, were awarded Medals of Honor for this action.
